FAQ
What makes HCA different?
HCA is a Christian school, but that doesn’t mean that we just add a Bible lesson to our curriculum. We do have daily Bible instruction and regular school-wide Chapels, but we think being a Christian school means much more than that. What makes us a Christian school is that we aim to incorporate our faith into everything we do. We want to teach every subject from a biblical worldview, and we want our students to see everything they do, from the way they study to the way they play at recess, as a chance to live out their faith.
How much does it cost?
All HCA families will qualify for the Choice Scholarship, which is a statewide program that empowers parents to choose the school that they believe will be the best fit for their student. With this scholarship, HCA families pay between $100 – $200 per month for a student’s tuition. Our goal from the beginning is to help make HCA accessible to as many families as possible who desire a Christian education. With this in mind, we have additional tuition assistance funds designated to help families who may need added help to attend our school.
Are you accredited?
We have received our Foundational Accreditation through ACSI (Association of Christian Schools International) which is recognized by the Indiana Department of Education. This Foundational Accreditation ensures we are meeting the requirements and best practices to open as a school that offers an excellent Christian education.
What curriculum do you use?
We primarily use curriculum from Abeka, a longtime publisher of K-12 curriculum with a deep commitment to biblical values and integrating faith into everything that is taught. Abeka has a strong phonics program that is excellent for teaching students to read. It also includes a Spiral Learning approach with purposeful repetition and reinforcement of concepts to enhance retention and integration. For many students transferring from other schools, Abeka is a step up in academic rigor. However, we believe students can rise to the challenge and are excited to cheer for them as their hard work turns into real growth.
What kind of technology do you use?
We purposely place a low emphasis on individual screen-based technology. You can read about our overall approach to technology in this blog post, but we find that parents are looking for less screens in school, not more. We embrace students reading books they can hold in their hands and practicing handwriting more than screen-time.
What if my child doesn't want to change schools?
As parents we love to see our children be happy. If you read our parent testimonials you will often see parents commenting about how much their child enjoys learning at HCA (and we are certainly thankful for that!). However, if you are a Christian parent, the happiness of your child is not your ultimate goal. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 lays out what our primary goal should be as parents: to teach our children to love God with all their heart, soul, and strength. And teaching our children to love God does not just happen for a few hours on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. Your child is learning what to love every hour of every day, and that includes the 35 hours a week they spend at school. Going to a new school can be hard, and it may not be what a child would choose at first. However, we believe that a school that continually points your child toward loving God is worth the struggle.
What if my child is afraid they won't have any friends?
Just about every student came to HCA unsure of who their classmates would be. One of the sweetest things to see here has been the way our students have formed a close-knit student body. We all know each other’s names, Kindergarten through 6th Grade. We play together at recess. We look out for each other. Making friends can feel hard, but it’s been amazing to see how students have been learning to connect with one another.
Do you have sports?
We believe that athletics can be a wonderful opportunity for students to grow in our mission of Thinking Biblically, Loving Sacrificially, and Living Honorably. We look forward to offering athletics programs based on student and parent interest. While we may not be able to offer every athletic team as we open, there are opportunties for students to compete in local organizations and teams. Students can participate in other local school teams through 5th grade and other community-based teams and leagues in 6th grade and beyond. You can visit www.youthactivities.in for a list of local opportunities in our community.
Do you have extracurricular activities besides sports?
We currently have weekly “specials” for Music, Library, and Curious Creators Class (Art), and we look forward to offering more options as we grow. We’re also very excited about some of the future partnership opportunities that may be available with the St. Joseph’s College vocational, trades, and certification programs and facilities. We are eager to offer our students unique and real-world opportunities to learn and grow.
What grades do you offer?
We currently offer grades K–6. We opened the Fall 2025 school year with grades K–5. In Fall 2026, we extended to 6th grade. Moving forward, our plan is to add a new grade level each year until we are a K–12 school. Our hope is that a student who starts at HCA has the option to remain at Harvest through their high school graduation if they desire.
How does the CHOICE program work?
The philosophy of School Choice is founded on the beliefs that parents are ultimately responsible for the education of their children, parents know the educational needs of their children best, and we should empower parents to choose the educational environment that is the best fit for their children. With this in mind, the state of Indiana provides the Choice Scholarship so that parents can apply to receive this scholarship to attend an accredited nonpublic school. Starting with the 26-27 school year, all Hoosier families will be eligible for the scholarship. HCA will help enrolled families apply for the Choice Scholarship, which will cover the majority of tuition costs.
How do you provide a safe and secure learning environment?
School safety is a top priority for us, and our location in the CORE building at Saint Joseph’s College gives us a separate wing of the building for our exclusive use. All doors have restricted and secure access. We have developed a comprehensive safety plan with help from our local law enforcement authorities to ensure our school is a safe environment for our students and staff.
How do you meet the needs of special education students?
Our desire is to serve every family who wants a Christian education for their child. However, with limited resources we know that we may not be able to serve every student and will have to evaluate each student’s needs on a case by case basis. There are some needs we can accommodate within our classrooms now, and we work with Cooperative School Services to provide some additional student services. In the future, our desire is to continue to expand the resources and services we can offer to students with special learning needs.
How do you handle lunches?
At this time students bring a lunch from home. We will continue to explore options for lunch programs in the future, but for now our families are able to pack their own lunches.
Do you have a before and after school program?
We know that before and after school childcare is a need for some of our families, and we’re thankful to be able to help. Currently, we offer Before and After Care from 6:30am – 5:30pm.
Do you offer transportation?
We serve families from a broad geographic area and are exploring transportation options. We do not have a bus route at this time but have had conversations with local organizations to help facilitate this in the future.
